My mistake, I meant to say D300s - who knows what I was thinking. Sorry

I was speculating that the 1D mark IV would have a higher res count than the 7D (before the 1Dmk4 was announced) because Canon just seem to be cramming pixels left and right (not a good thing) and I was hoping they may increase the resolution of the video - but I knew that wouldn't happen.

Maybe you're right about 1080p. It's far from perfect on any Canon cameras right now.

But regardless, it's a great time for technology, and competition will really push all camera makers to make better cameras.

Wow - I thought the D700 didn't have any video, let alone finding out it has a 720/24p mode which looks good. The Canon Eos 1d Mk IV DOESN'T "trump" the resolutions on the 7d (don't know why you thought it would) they are the same (resolution-wise). It is becoming a general consensus I believe that the Canons do not deliver a true 1080p resolution, and that, in fact the 720p proffered by Nikon may very well be the equivalent resolution (and without as much moire and aliasing).
